silk

A continuous long fiber formed by the solidification of silk liquid secreted by mature silkworms when they cocoon. Also known as natural silk, it is a natural fiber. Man used one of the earliest animal fibers. According to archaeological findings, about 4,700 years ago, China made silk thread, woven ribbon and simple silk fabrics from silk. During the Shang and Zhou Dynasties, silk fabrics such as Luo, Ling, Wan, Yarn, Crepe, Qi, Brocade and Embroidery were woven from silk. Silkworms include silkworm, tussah, castor silkworm, cassava silkworm, willow silkworm and wild silkworm. Silk strips extracted from a single cocoon are called cocoon filaments. It is made of two single fibers bonded and coated by sericin. When reeling, the cocoon filaments of several cocoons are extracted and glued to form silk strips, which are collectively called silk. Silk without sericin is called refined silk. The largest amount of silk is mulberry silk, followed by tussah silk, and other silks have not formed resources due to limited quantity. Silk is light and slender, with good luster, comfortable to wear, smooth and plump to the touch, poor thermal conductivity, moisture absorption and air permeability. It is used to weave all kinds of silks, satins and knitwear, and is also used in the fields of industry, national defense and medicine. China, Japan, India, the former Soviet Union and North Korea are the main silk producing countries, accounting for more than 90% of the world's total output.
