The head is a glossy ganoderma auspicious cloud, and many carving techniques, such as full-body carving, relief carving, through carving and hollow carving, are used interchangeably. The works are full of charm, natural and elegant. Carving ruyi in regular script has always been an ornament symbolizing good luck and ruyi in Confucius' house. It is a tribute to emperors in past dynasties and a gift to dignitaries. In the 17th year of Guangxu reign, Zhang Rumei, a provincial official in Shandong Province, presented two birthday gifts to the Empress Dowager: one was carved with eight immortals and the other with an hundred immortals, which was delicate and amiable, and was called extinct.
