Tomato in Pukou Yangcun Village

Pukou Yangcun began to develop tomato production in 1970s and 1980s. After decades of large-scale planting, it has successively established five tomato bases, namely, Prosperity, Gaoyang, Pukou West, Shuilintou and Hujiaqiao. Now, more than 1,400 mu of tomatoes are planted in greenhouses all the year round. More than 85% of the villagers in the village are mainly engaged in overwintering tomato cultivation and tomato sales. It is a well-known professional tomato production village. In 2002, the village established "Taizhou Huangyan Yuanqiao Tomato Professional Cooperative" and registered the "Chenyang" tomato trademark. In 2004, the cooperative was standardized, and 114 growers joined the cooperative. Through the cooperative's unified planting, unified management and unified sales, the industrial level of tomato planting in Yuanqiao was improved. Nowadays, tomato production has become a pillar industry in Pukou Yangcun, and tomato income has become the main source of income for the villagers. "Chenyang" brand tomato has also been recognized as the pollution-free product base in Zhejiang Province, the national pollution-free agricultural product producing area, the Zhejiang green agricultural product, the national green food certification, the Zhejiang Agricultural Expo quality agricultural product gold award and other honorary titles, and its products sell well in cities in Taizhou, Hangzhou, Ningbo and other provinces as well as large and medium-sized cities outside the province such as Nanjing, Changzhou and Shanghai. At present, the annual tomato planting area in Yuanqiao Town has reached more than 7,500 mu, accounting for 95% of the total area in huangyan district. The total tomato output has reached 30,000 tons, with an output value of more than 50 million yuan, and the average net income per mu has exceeded 8,000 yuan. Tomato has become an efficient and characteristic pillar industry for agricultural efficiency and farmers' income.
