Taoshan sugarcane is a specialty of Taoshan Town, Ruian City, Wenzhou City, Zhejiang Province. Taoshan sugar cane, also known as Taoshan sugar cane and fruit cane, is one of the excellent fruit cane varieties in Zhejiang Province, with thin skin, crisp and long juice, sweet taste and loose and soft residue. According to records, sugar cane was planted in Taoshan during the Southern and Northern Dynasties, but the sugar cane at that time was very hard and bitter. Later, Tao Hongjing, a Taoist thinker and physician who lived in seclusion in the Qi and Liang Dynasties in the Southern Dynasties, saw this situation and gave the residue of an alchemist to farmers as fertilizer. The sugarcane planted in the coming year was really thin, crisp and sweet. Taoshan sugarcane belongs to the original species of tropical sugarcane cultivation, which has the characteristics of tall plants, stout stems, developed roots, high sugar content and high yield. The cultivation history of sugar cane in Taoshan has been nearly a thousand years, and the planting area has been expanding. At present, in addition to Taoshan, Mayu, Xianjiang, Gaolou and Huling are also cultivated. In 2012, Taoshan Town planted 3,800 mu of sugarcane, including 2,000 mu of green skin and 1,800 mu of red skin, mainly distributed on both sides of Feiyunjiang River and Jinchao Port. Taoshan established a sugarcane professional cooperative, expanded the planting area and introduced complete sets of assembly line equipment for sugarcane deep processing. After automatic cleaning, sterilization, disinfection and exquisite packaging, Taoshan sugarcane has reached a new level and has now entered major supermarkets.
