Lubu Buddha carving

Lubu Buddha carving originated in the Wei and Jin Dynasties, was popular in the Tang Dynasty and flourished in the Qing Dynasty, with more than 400 famous craftsmen. Most of the Buddhists in Lubu carve Buddhas with precious wood such as camphor wood and nanmu. Because of their exquisite craftsmanship and lifelike expression, they are deeply welcomed by all walks of life, and their products are all over the world. Mount Tai, the top of Huashan Mountain, the side of the West Lake, and the Buddhist country in the South China Sea, where there is a land of bells and whistles and Buddhist attractions, there are works by famous Buddhist sculptors in Lubu. Many famous Buddhist sculptors have traveled across the ocean and spread their art overseas, enjoying a long-standing reputation. There are about 600 kinds of Buddhas carved in Lubu, which are based on Buddhist scriptures and figures in myths and legends, such as Guanyin, Jigong, Maitreya and Wei Tuo. These Buddhas are all carved by craftsmen. The famous sculptors of Lubu Buddha sculpt the composition of each Buddha statue with ease. Every axe and chisel is closely related to the voice, smile, personality and costume of the Buddha statue. Before liberation, the Buddha carving in Lubu was on the verge of despair. After the founding of New China, the people's government paid great attention to and supported this traditional craft, and organized scattered artists to carry out the production of Buddha carving. In 1962, Master Huang Bingrong, a famous contemporary artist, returned to his hometown from Shanghai to teach his apprentice. In 1963, he set up the Buddha carving workshop of Lubuqiao West Bakelite Factory, and in 1978, he set up the Lubu Craft Carving Factory. The products were sold to the United States, Singapore, Hong Kong, Macao and other countries and regions by the handicraft import and export companies in Shanghai, Zhejiang and Ningbo. At present, there are several Buddha carving craft factories in Lubu, and their products are exported to Southeast Asian countries and enjoy a good reputation.
