Siyang root carving

Root carving takes the autogenous and distorted forms of tree roots (including tree body, tree tumor, bamboo root, etc.) as the artistic creation object, and creates artistic image works such as figures, animals and utensils through conception, artistic processing and technological treatment. The production of root carving can generally be divided into eight steps: degreasing, peeling and cleaning, dehydration and drying, shaping, finishing, quenching, coloring and painting, and naming. The creation of root art is a hard work, which takes a year and a half, or even longer, to complete from material selection, modeling, conception and production to naming. Siyang is the "hometown of Yiyang in China". Chen Congzhao, an old farmer in his seventies in Xinhua Village, South Liuji Township, has a special liking for the roots of poplars. The "root carvings" of poplars processed by him are unique and are a wonderful work in the local folk art treasure house. Representative works include Heaping Grey Words to Bless Later Generations, Surabaya Flowing Forever, Spring Forever, Turtle, Tree Soul, Sprouting, Phoenix Begging for Phoenix, Golden Rooster Announcing Dawn, Nest Selection, Flower Shelf and Vase.
