Rudong Porphyra is a specialty of Rudong County, Nantong City, Jiangsu Province. Rudong Porphyra, with its bright color, delicious taste, rich nutrition and unique flavor, sells well in more than 20 large and medium-sized cities in China and more than 10 countries such as Japan, South Korea, the United States and Australia. Porphyra, also known as sokkai and Ziying, belongs to Porphyra yezoensis, a plant in the family Brassica. The algae body is a flat leaflike body with a disc-shaped fixer at the base. The growing period (thallus) is from November to May of the following year. It grows on the rocks in the relatively calm middle tidal zone in the bay. This is an algae with high nutritional value. In 1972, Rudong began to introduce Porphyra yezoensis, and first tried planting in Dongling Fishery Commune, which was successful. So it was promoted to various fishery communes. The quality of Porphyra yezoensis is better than other Porphyra yezoensis. In the second year, the county raised a total of 2.46 hectares. In 1976, 26.66 hectares were farmed, with an average output value of more than 10,000 yuan per hectare, of which 10.33 hectares were farmed by Huanghai Brigade of Beikan Fishery Corporation, with an output value of 18,700 yuan per hectare, ranking first in the province. In 1987, the county's aquaculture area was more than 80 hectares, with an annual output of 90 tons. In addition to supplying the domestic market, it was also exported to Japan, Thailand and other places. In 1998, the aquaculture area reached 1,608.66 hectares, with an annual output value exceeding 100 million yuan, making it the largest laver production base in China. In 2011, the offshore aquaculture area was 8,000 hectares, and the output of dry products reached 150,000 TEUs, with an output value of 250 million yuan. Rudong Tianyi Porphyra Market has become the largest, most complete and largest trading market of dried Porphyra in China, Japan and South Korea.
