Tie-dyeing is an ancient handicraft, which was first seen in Wei and Jin Dynasties, Southern and Northern Dynasties, prevailed in Tang Dynasty, and was banned by Emperor Renzong of Northern Song Dynasty because of the extravagance and labor of tie-dyeing clothes, which made the tie-dyeing process once lost. In the early 1970s, Nantong first resumed tie-dyeing production, and continued to innovate, making tie-dyeing techniques more perfect. Tie-dyeing can be divided into two categories: tying and sewing. Tie-tying is also called caviar. It uses thread to wrap around and tie four knots on a small point with a large grain of rice in sequence, which requires high technology and the product is full of three-dimensional and elasticity. Sewing and twisting is to use needle and thread to walk through according to the designed pattern and shape, draw tight and dye, the decorative pattern is lively and generous, and the charm is vivid and natural. Tie-dyed products are rich and varied, including fashion, ties, scarves, handbags and other daily necessities, as well as precious handicrafts such as kimonos, belts and wall hangings. There are both silk products and cotton and linen fabrics.
