Ai Shan melon

Ai Shan melon

Ai Shan melon is a specialty of Xuzhou. Watermelon in Ai Shan once enjoyed a great reputation in history, and it was a big one with high quality. One person can only stir up two watermelons. Generally, there are four kinds of melons: one is black skin, the other is black seed, and the other is red pulp, which is called black jar skin; A kind of flower skin (black stripes on green background), also with black seeds and red pulp, is called Jieyi; A kind of white skin, white seeds and white pulp is called three whites; A kind of pulp with small head, thin skin, small seeds and red black skin is called wind seedling seed. It is better to have one melon per plant in the first three species, and 3-5 seeds can be produced per plant. The biggest advantage of watermelon in Ai Shan is that its juice is rich in sugar, and it is full of sand pulp. When eaten in the mouth, the sand is rumbling, and it is rich in honey and fragrant. Nowadays, people often take Ai Shan melon as the signboard in the melon market, but the Ai Shan melon seen in the market today is not the former variety at all. It is a common hybrid melon, which is not only small, but also solid and not sweet. Ai Shan melon has a long history. According to historical records, during the Warring States Period, the State of Chu planted large melons in the border area (now around Qicheng, Anhui Province). The Wei people wanted this kind of melon, but the Chu people refused to give it to them. A war broke out between the two countries, and then they made peace in Qicheng, and watermelons spread to the north. Watermelon cultivation has also started in Pidi, and Ai Shan watermelon is the best. There are two reasons for the excellent quality of watermelons in Ai Shan in history. First, the natural conditions are superior, and the Ai Shan area is all green sand soil; Second, it is a technical problem. In the past, people in Ai Shan used sesame cake residue to apply melon fertilizer without other fertilizers.
