Jiading bamboo carving

Jiading bamboo carving has a long history, which was a famous handicraft in Shanghai as early as the Ming and Qing Dynasties. There are two kinds of bamboo carving in Jiading: plane carving and three-dimensional carving. Three-dimensional carvings are mainly bamboo roots, and plane carvings are fan bones, pen containers, vases, etc. There are many kinds of carving methods, such as negative carving, positive carving, leather carving and mold carving, among which the green leather carving is the most distinctive. The green peel carving uses the green peel of bamboo as the flower and the bamboo muscle as the bottom, and uses the different colors to carve layers of pictures. Appreciating artworks such as carved books, paintings, screen inserts and hanging screens, and practical handicrafts such as cigarette cases, pencil cases and vases are meticulous and exquisite, and the patterns are beautiful and elegant. Jiading Bamboo Carving was founded in Qin Long and Wanli of Ming Dynasty (1567-1619), with a history of more than 400 years. At that time, the development of bamboo carving technology in the south of the Yangtze River formed two schools with their own characteristics: one was Jinling School, and the other was Jiading School, with Jiading School being more prosperous. In the Qing Dynasty, Jiading County had become the center of bamboo carving technology. Zhu Songlin, the founder of Jiading School, was originally a person who was good at poetry, calligraphy and painting. He was able to use brushwork to handle knives and was brave in innovation, which was beyond others' reach. His son Zhu Xiaosong and grandson Zhu Sansong all inherited this business. Zhu Xiaosong's engraving of "Ancient Fairy Buddha" is highly praised by the world. Zhu Sansong took the traditional skills of his parents and grandparents one step further, and the figures, landscapes, grass insects and birds he carved were exquisite in knife cutting, all of which were exquisite and had a sense of freshness and agility. Later, there were many famous bamboo carvings in Jiading, such as Qin Yijue, Shen Dasheng and Hou Ganzeng in Ming Dynasty, Feng Yinggu, Shi Dajing and Zhang Xuehai in Qing Dynasty, and so on. Bamboo carving in Jiading is extremely prosperous. Jiading bamboo carving is a certification trademark of geographical indications.
