Shanghai tooth carving

There are three main types of ivory carvings in Shanghai: carved fine flowers, leather carvings and round carved figures. Among them, carved fine flowers are the most distinctive scenery, which is as famous as round carvings in Beijing, embossed figures, multi-layered tooth balls in Guangzhou and the carved flower boat. The characteristics of Shanghai's tooth carving with fine flowers were formed at the beginning of the 20th century, with rich themes, diverse forms, full composition, vivid images and rich painting. The knife skill of the work is clean and neat, and the craft is exquisite and delicate. In particular, the hollowed-out carving integrates the interior and exterior scenes, which is full of local characteristics in Jiangnan. Representative works include White Snail Girl, Clam Scene, Eighteen Arhats Fighting Dapeng, Pipa Trip, Under the River, Spring Scene, Dragon Boat, Jiangnan Scenery and other treasures.
