hazel grouse

Hazelnut Chicken Hazelnut Chicken, commonly known as "Feilong", is a national first-class protected animal. Belonging to the order galliformes, grouse, there are three species in the world, namely, hazel-tailed pheasant, hazel-tailed pheasant and shawl-tailed pheasant. Shawl chickens are distributed in the United States and Canada in North America, and hazelnut chickens are widely distributed, from Scandinavia at the western end of Eurasia, the Pyrenees in Spain to the east, to the coast of Okhotsk in the far east of Russia, northeast China, Korea and Hokkaido in Japan. Compared with the above two species, the distribution range of the spotted-tailed hazel chicken is much smaller. It is a special species in China, distributed in northern and western Sichuan, Gansu, eastern and southern Qinghai, eastern Tibet and northwestern Yunnan. The first two kinds can be seen in China, among which hazelnut is the most common one. In spring and summer, they like to live in the depths of coniferous and broad-leaved mixed forests or broad-leaved forests, and they often move around forest edges such as river valleys and roadsides in autumn and winter. The hazel-tailed chicken is smaller than the domestic chicken, weighing about 400 grams, with brown hair and dark brown horizontal spots. The cock has a black throat and white sides. The female chicken's feathers are slightly darker, and her throat is grayish white with dark brown stripes. During the day, they often feed in groups of 5-10 in the forest, and their feeding habits are very diverse. They feed on green leaves, seeds and paddles, and they also eat some insects during the breeding period. The rooster contacts his partner with a shrill and crisp cry. When in danger, he cranes his neck to observe the movement, and then takes off after confirming the danger. He can only fly 20-30 meters at a time. In the severe winter covered with heavy snow, hazel-tailed pheasant often moves in the trees and gets into the snow nest for the night. It is a kind of resident bird. The nest of hazel-tailed pheasant is built next to fallen trees or tree roots, which is very hidden. It lays eggs from April to early May, and produces a nest of 11-12 eggs every year. The incubation period is about 21 days. The female chicken loves the nest during the incubation period and never leaves easily. Chickens shed their shells in early June and can grow into adults in mid-August. The hazel-tailed pheasant is one of the main hunting birds in the forest region of Heilongjiang Province. Its meat is tender, delicious and nutritious, and it was used as a tribute to the emperor in ancient times.
