Shadow play and paper-cutting are a pair of sister arts. Shadow play was called paper shadow in the early years, because all the materials it made were thin cardboard. Because the shadow people cut out by paper carving are easily broken and vulnerable, they began to switch to cowhide or donkey skin, which has been inherited to this day. Shadow puppeteers' modeling characteristics and production techniques are similar to those of paper-cutting, so many shadow puppeteers are often masters of paper-cutting.
