Asarum is a perennial herb of the genus Asarum in Aristolochiaceae. It is named asarum because of its fine roots and pungent taste. It is a special medicinal material in Liaoning Province, so it is also called Liaoxixin. Since the late 1950s, Liaoning Province has been experimenting with wild varieties of asarum. After 1970s, the artificially cultivated asarum has been widely popularized in the mountainous areas of eastern Liaoning.
