Youyu mutton

Origin: Youyu County, based on the unique local natural and geographical conditions and rich forest and grass resources, promotes the industrialization development model of "enterprise (cooperative)+base+farmer" and vigorously develops animal husbandry mainly focusing on raising sheep. At present, there are 650,000 sheep and 23,000 mutton sheep farmers in the county, and a number of leading mutton sheep processing enterprises such as Yuyang Company have emerged in the county, which not only increases farmers' income, but also promotes agricultural development. Landmark: In 2010, the Ministry of Agriculture granted Youyu County "Youyu Mutton" the geographical protection registration of agricultural products in People's Republic of China (PRC), making it the first animal product in Shanxi Province to win the national geographical indication of agricultural products. The designated geographical protection scope is 321 administrative villages in 10 towns and villages, including Xincheng Town, Youwei Town, Weiyuan Town, Yuanbaozi Town, Gaojiabao Township and Niuxin Township in Youyu County, with a breeding capacity of 650,000 and an annual output of 4,500 tons. The protected area is rich in forage resources, abundant in water, wide in grazing slope, and the forest coverage rate reaches more than 50%, which is conducive to the high-quality and standardized breeding of Youyu mutton sheep. Units and individuals that meet the requirements within the scope of regional protection may apply to the holder of the registration book for the use of geographical indications of agricultural products.
