The seed fiber of Gossypium in Malvaceae is produced in most subtropical countries. In the tropics, it can grow to 6 meters (20 feet) high, usually 12 meters (46 feet). The flowers are milky white, turn crimson shortly after flowering, and then fade, leaving a green cotton boll with cottonseed inside, and the fuzz on the cottonseed grows from the cotton seed skin. Cotton bolls split when they mature, revealing soft fibers. The fiber is white and yellow, about 24 cm (0. 751.5 inch) long, containing about 8790% cellulose, 58% water and 46% other substances. The origin of cotton is India and Arabia. Before cotton was introduced into China, there was only kapok for filling pillows and mattresses in China, and there was no cotton for weaving. Before the Song Dynasty, China only had the word "cotton" next to silk, but not the word "cotton" next to wood. The word "cotton" began to appear in Song Shu. It can be seen that cotton was introduced in the Northern and Southern Dynasties at the latest, but it was mostly planted in the frontier. A large number of cotton was introduced into the mainland, when it was in the late Song Dynasty and early Yuan Dynasty.
