Sorghum straw technology

Sorghum straw technology is mainly distributed in jingxing mining area, starting from the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China. The works are made of sorghum straw planted by some rural farmers in Jingxing around the mining area, and its creative means are completely manual, that is, using comprehensive technological processes such as "selection, cutting, cutting, carving, engraving, biting and gluing". The correlators used in the production process include homemade knives, scissors, pliers, files, small chainsaws (homemade), adhesives, etc. Their works are rigorous in technological structure, unique in shape, lifelike and simple in image, and have typical regional performance and folk characteristics. The categories of works include flowers, birds, insects, beasts, ancient buildings and portraits. Among the straw carving artists in jingxing mining area, Xu Yaode, a folk artist, is the representative. In the 1930s, on the basis of inheriting predecessors, Xu Yaode learned from old artists to make simple works such as small lanterns, small hydrangeas and straw hats by biting sorghum stalks. After that, he developed a series of works through continuous exploration. His works are vivid in image, fine in workmanship and distinctive in characteristics, which are of great protection value. The representative work "China Bailongbi" is 9 meters long and 3 meters high. It shares more than 300,000 pieces of sorghum stalks, stalks and skins, and has more than 1 million processes. It took 12 apprentices and students to make it for more than 10 months. "Bailongbi" takes the idea of "99 to one", and 99 dragons are different in shape and vivid. When it was exhibited in China Wanbo Cultural City, Nandaihe in 1996, president Jiang Zemin repeatedly praised it and shook hands with the author to encourage congratulations. "The New Attitude of Longmen", this work is made of sorghum stalks, stems and skins, and it takes 14 months to complete by carving, cutting, sticking, weaving and biting. Its products are divided into three parts: upper, middle and lower parts, that is, the upper part is Lingxiao Hall (ancient building), the middle part is 26 dragons splashing pearls in the lotus pond, and the lower part is the dragon crossing the sea. In 1990, he donated four works of the Beijing Asian Games, including Longmen New Capital, Tengfei and Cosmic kowloon cup. Other works include Jade Dragon and Golden Phoenix, Golden Rooster at Dawn, six screens and portraits of Cao Xueqin and Lei Feng. Because the skills are mainly taught by word of mouth, it is difficult to inherit. At present, a straw art research society has been established in the mining area to explore and protect the production process of sorghum straw art and the artistic connotation of some finished works.
