Shawo radish, also known as Tianjin Wei Qing radish, is commonly known as Sai Yali pear. Legend has it that in order to please the emperor, Yan Song of Ming Dynasty shipped the whole litchi tree from the south to Tianjin. After arriving at the shore, he quickly took the litchi from the tree and sent it to the Beijing Palace to keep it fresh. The soil at the root of the litchi tree was on the bank of Haihe River in Liu Zhuang, Tianjin, and accumulated more than 10 mu of sand over the years. At that time, farmers used their soil to grow green radishes, obtained radishes with excellent taste, and then transplanted them to Shawo village in the western suburbs, so Shawo radishes became famous. Shawo radish is green in color, sweet in taste, crisp and juicy, which is split at a beat. It is described by the people as falling off eight petals at a time, and it is resistant to winter storage, which has won people's favor. It is also a traditional export commodity unique to Tianjin Port and exported to Japan, Southeast Asia, Hong Kong and Macao. The cultivation of green radish in Tianjin was recorded in the Yuan Dynasty and has a history of more than 600 years. The radish in Shawo-Sai Yali pear, radish in Shawo-is crunchy. These are two two allegorical sayings that Tianjin people often say. Shawo green radish is the representative of Tianjin radish, which is most favored by people. Mainly green as jade, it will break when it hits the ground, and it will be crisp, sweet, spicy and refreshing when eaten raw. It will strengthen the stomach and help digestion, clear away heat and detoxify, and open the chest with qi. In the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China, every autumn and winter, there were cries of selling green radish everywhere in the streets, hotels, bathhouses, theaters and tea houses. People regard green radish as a delicacy. After a meal, eating a few petals of green radish will cause hiccups, but I feel that my five internal organs are ventilated, my stomach is happy and refreshed, and I feel comfortable all over. As the saying goes, eating radish in winter and ginger in summer, keeping healthy all year round, and heating tea when there are radishes, all belong to the way of keeping in good health. Why is the green radish in Shawo so delicious? The main reason is that the soil there is fertile and suitable for the growth of green radish. There is a legend among the people here: According to legend, during the Jiajing period of Ming Dynasty, Emperor Zhu Houzong had a love princess who loved litchi in the south. Due to the inconvenient transportation, it is difficult to keep fresh. Prime Minister Yan Song offered a plan to dig up the whole litchi tree and ship it to Tianjin, and take the litchi flying horse from the shore and send it to the palace, while the remaining soil of the litchi tree fell to the bank of the canal in Xiaoshawo Village. Local residents leveled the fertile soil accumulated for many years and planted green radishes. The radishes produced were all good in color and taste, which made them famous for a while. Shawo radish is an excellent variety and a representative product of green radish produced in Tianjin, which is favored by people. Shawo radish is not only popular in China, but also exported to Hong Kong and Macao, Japan and Southeast Asian countries in large quantities every year, which is extremely popular. It is a unique traditional export commodity at Tianjin Port.
