Kite Wei

Kite Wei is a kite made by Wei Yuantai, a famous kite artist in Tianjin, so it is called "Kite Wei". Wei Yuantai was born in Tianjin in 1872. He was an apprentice in a Zhacaipu since childhood, and he was interested in making kites. In order to improve the attainments of kite-tying, he repeatedly studied the flying posture of birds and insects and the proportional relationship of their body parts, and applied them to kite-making. In the past, kites were mainly made of hard wings, with simple shapes and monotonous colors, which were integral. The kite he tied can be unfolded and folded. A big kite more than a foot long can be put in a small envelope after folding, which is convenient for collection and carrying. He has developed nearly 200 kinds of flat, bow, three-dimensional, string and pocket kites. It is rich in national characteristics in coloring, and absorbs the fainting method used in painting of ancient buildings and the contrast tone of cold and warm, making it more suitable for flying at high altitude. In 1914, he took a kite to the Panama World Expo and won a gold medal and certificate. Now Wei Yuantai's nephew Wei Shenxing and grandnephew Wei Yongchang have inherited his career. They all work in Tianjin Arts and Crafts Factory as craftsmen and have trained many apprentices. The new samples they designed are well-known at home and abroad.
