Langjiayuan jujube is a famous Beijing specialty fruit. In the 500-mu jujube garden in Wangsiying Township, Chaoyang District, red jujubes are hung on the branches, announcing the successful resumption of planting of this superior jujube variety which has been away from the Beijing market for more than 40 years. Langjiayuan jujube, which has a long cultivation history and is well-known at home and abroad, was named after Langjiayuan, Gaobeidian Township, Chaoyang District, and was listed as one of the royal palace tributes in the Qing Dynasty. With the development of urban construction, Langjiayuan area has become an industrial area, and Langjiayuan jujube is on the verge of despair. In 1987, Chaoyang Agriculture and Forestry Institute cooperated with Beijing Agricultural College to start the research experiment on the recovery and development of Langjiayuan jujube. This spring, scientific and technical personnel raised 1 million finished seedlings and sowed 200 mu of Ziziphus jujuba seedlings in Wangsiying Township, making full preparations for the next step of breeding finished seedlings. A difficult problem in jujube planting in Langjiayuan is difficult fruit setting and low yield. A big tree that has grown naturally for more than ten years produces only about 2 kilograms of fruit a year. Scientific and technical personnel have taken various measures, such as strengthening fertilizer and water management, restoring tree vigor, spraying water and boron at flowering stage, girdling and so on, which greatly improved the yield of Langjiayuan jujube.
